The first decorative technique I experimented with on white earthenware: oxide pencils. Simple, pencils formulated with a colored pigment-based tip for drawing on ceramics. More precisely, on cookie, i.e. on the first firing.
Advantages. I can draw just like with a graphite pencil. Which gives me great freedom in my choice of graphics. Well, almost.
Disadvantages . The rendering isn’t really up to scratch because the oxides are powdery, so the line isn’t very fluid and you have to be very careful about streaks! The lead is very dry, so it can break easily. And sharpening it is a real pain! Then, in terms of rendering after baking, I have the impression that there’s a real difference depending on the brand. The colors can really be pretty awful. I can understand why some ceramists stick to blue, which stands out well, like Charlotte Talbot, for example.
Verdict. I didn’t really like it, but it’s worth trying again. On porcelain.
